What a jewel this books is. A fierce, brilliant jewel.

There is defiance.

MEDITATION ON A MEDITATION OF FROST

Affection is a dumb dog
Whoever said that
didn't own
me
was not
my master

There is freshness in places people have been before.

from THE STORM

...Your not-success
crackles like lightening around you--
so bright and mighty that for a time
you feel blessed.

And there are morsels of truth throughout that burn as they land ever so lightly.

from THE MARCH

I spent all day
not doing
my hair

A lot of receipts
and decisions
concerning food

In THE GRIEF PERFORMANCE, her first full collection, Emily Kendal Frey reminds us what poetry is for.

I heard Emily read several of these poems, in person, and hear her voice in my head when I read them to myself. Amazing.
