I thought the book was alright? I kind of had some expectations for it but It just felt really bland.

As a female manga nerd, I am ashamed of how this book portrays us. Talk about generalizing.

Fifteen year old Maddy's parents are going through a divorce. She's suddenly uprooted from her friends and everything she knows in Boston to be transplanted to suburbia, in a school full of "Aberzombies", you know one of those places where you have to look like Barbie and Ken if you want to fit in. Maddy isn't quite that kind of girl. She likes anime, draws her own manga, and has a slightly edgy look.

Her first day goes amazingly well when her grandmother forces her to wear a unicorn sweater and mom jeans. Things really can't get much worse but then she becomes the enemy of the most popular guy in school... too bad his best friend and fellow aberzombie is actually nice, not to mention cute. Maddy's only means of escape becomes her new Fields of Fantasy game. It's there that she becomes Allora, a beautiful elfin princess who somehow wins the heart of the handsome Sir Leo. But will this fantasy ever play out IRL (in real life)? Or is she doomed to be a nobody forever?

If you're a girl who loves anime, manga, and video games, then this is the book for you! If you are in highschool or have ever been in highschool, you will relate to the feelings and ordeals that Maddy experiences. Just make sure to brush up a little on your gamer language ;)

This book gets a lot of hate, and on some level, I understand why: it’s fan fiction, loosely based on 2004’s A Cinderella Story, and I cringe whenever Maddy or Sir Leo says something like, “Now I’m/you’re a real gamer girl!” Still, I think it’s a sweet, cutesy love story. I was that bullied “Freak Girl” in high school (though I had better taste in music), and I relate to Maddy for this reason. Plus, I’m a sucker for a story about online romance. I can’t get enough of that air of mystery and uncertainty. (“Who is he in real life? Will he like me offline?” Etc.) I knew Maddy and Sir Leo would wind up together, and I knew who he was long before she did, but the journey still made me sigh. What can I say? I’m a teenage girl at heart.

Nothing fancy, but a light happy-go-lucky read. I enjoyed all the characters and loved Maddie as a protagonist.

I loved the celebration of all ‘geeky’ things (ie. Manga, video gaming, etc.). It was enjoyable to read a book where characters learned to embrace their geeky interests and all came together for a 100% happy ending.

Just an overall enjoyable, heartwarming read.

I read this AGES ago in high school and it was so, so important to me. I need to reread and properly review.

...I don't feel like a 2 star rating is generous in this one. The story itself had potential, but...like other reviewers have said: there wasn't anything original about this. I knew immediately who SirLeo would end up being --and who else called Matt being gay?

I would like to give the author benefit of ye doubt of being a young, inexperienced writer, but her bio at the back states she had a few other books. Obviously someone needs to progress a little more because this isn't the quality I would expect out of an experiences writer.

The story premise itself had a lot of promise and I'm sure another author could blow me away --but this rendition failed spectacularly.

This book was really cliche and predictable. Very typical storyline. So, it was a bit cringey at some points because it was so predictable. However, it was still really cute, and I have a soft spot for stories about nerdy girls, as I myself am a nerdy girl. Even if they are super unrealistic and would never ever happen in real life.
