Um....

...look. This was, without a doubt, an excellent book. Like any book of poetry, some of it was feeble, some striking, and most just sort of there. And the subject matter is somewhat interesting.

But I was beaten up by it. Because yet again, the white man is a cruel Machiavellian villain, and it makes me feel like shit. And, to be frank, I have never done anything to warrent feeling like shit about race.

Yes, it happened. Yes, it happens everyday. And I work to make things better in my own little way. But nothing about this book told me anything about MacNolia other than that the white man fucked her over and ruined her life. Is that really the message we want to keep repeating again and again and again? Isn't it at least POSSIBLE that we can learn something else about ourselves through these stories of racial segregation, oppression, and the subsequent white man's guilt than just to be able to point out injustice?
