Wow.
Dense, rich, exciting.
Wonderfully complex characters, few of them truly likeable. What a fantastic story.

This trilogy and The Levant Trilogy are interesting glimpses into the author's world. They are not the most profound studies but are quick reads and worthwhile.

An excellent and enjoyable story about a young British coupple stuck in Eastern Europe as WWII begins. My favourite part was the atmosphere of ordinary people at the fringe of war trying to live their everyday life. The madness and pressure were well-described through the actions and words of the characters, no extra drama needed.

All the characters in this trilogy are flawed in their own way and sometimes painfully aware of it. They make stupid decisions and are unable to think ahead more than a few days. I think this adds to the realism of the story: these are not war heros, but normal people who panic even at the thought of battle.
