One of the most complex books I have ever read. I do not understand it. It’s glorious.

The constant callbacks and song lyrics that resonate with not only the story, but also the reader were a nice first for me. It was great to have "heroes" with some substance to them, to give them life and make them unique from each other. The themes of depression, sexual violence, wanting the best, abuse in all forms, fighting for truth, and how most everything was not what it seemed, were integrated beautifully throughout the story. The language was of a higher level, and I am glad that I read it at my current age. Though I still feel there were few parts I did not fully comprehend, I was able to grasp and question the majority of it. Seeing life as a miracle and being happy just to enjoy being alive was a quintessential part of the plot. This novel was not afraid to get dark and the underlying comic throughout helped not only story build, but it also helped in building tension. I do believe this is a must read novel if you can stomach it.

Dark, gritty, noir. A classic.

Pretty much brilliant.

That was the first review I wrote of [b:Watchmen|472331|Watchmen|Alan Moore|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1238274511s/472331.jpg|4358649] when I read it a few years back. I still feel that way, for all it is not my favorite of [a:Alan Moore|3961|Alan Moore|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1304944713p2/3961.jpg]'s works. A postmodern view of the 1980s that still feels relevant, this graphic novel is truly a literary work. Based on the concept of washed up superheroes, the book builds a sense of dread and questions the very concept of life and its worth. The discovery of a megalomonomaniacal figure pulling the strings of the world leaves a fair amount of uncertainty as to whether he is a hero or a villain. Ultimately, the question of whether or not the ending is good or bad remains. I have my own opinion. What is yours?

I saw the movie first, and am surprised by how well they captured this graphic novel. Of course, now I have to watch the movie again, because I'm pretty sure the ending was completely different. Very cool book, though.
