This would have to be my favorite book and series, the one i recommend to everyone. Loved the idea of going back in time and falling in love and all the things that come with that. Characters are so lovable. Will read again!

Rereading the start to the outlander series (which by no means was one of those 'setting the scene' novels in a series) reminded me why it garners the title 'epic' and 'outstanding'. Gabladon's academic backdrop sets a tone of keeping the reader fully immersed throughout the story, if not by the academic inputs, by the historic context, or she can distract you by botanic monologues, friendship, relationships all through the eyes of a smart spoken contemporary LIKEABLE protagonists- Claire and Jaime Fraser. They are both impeccably smart in their own culture, and reading the slow burn formation of what they end up becoming is such a joy to read! The pacing (I credit Gabaldon's background in her plethora of degrees) in knowing how important that it when tackling time traveling/historical fictions novels is perfect, and there was not one moment in the novel that seemed to lag. No character seemed forgettable and no character, even in passing made you want to skip that section just for the sake of edging closer to the end in the efforts to plow through the remaining 800+ pages. Here's to book 2! Dragonfly in Amber....x

Peope either loved this book or hated it. Based on my star choices, it's obvious that I'm in the love category (about a 4.5). I was fortunate to be able to be on spring break and really had time to dive into an 800 page book, and am so glad I did! For being as long as it is, it's actually a pretty fast read. The writing is easy to read, and there's not so many characters that you're getting completely mixed up.

The storyline seems somewhat simple at first. Claire is quite happily married to her husband, Frank, in 1945. Things are going along swimmingly when she ends up transported to approximately 200 years prior and lands in Scotland. During this time, there are fights (of course), diseases without modern medicine to fix them (of course), witches (of course), lust (of course), and love. The choice for Claire whether to remain in the mid 1700s is not a simple one, especially after she meets the very handsome Jamie.

Characters are well developed, but I particularly love Claire. She's a feisty sort, who was a former combat nurse in WWII. Thus, she can cuss right along with the best of men. There's even an entire scene devoted to profanity! She isn't shy at all, and actually gets herself in a wee bit of trouble on occasion due to her inability to keep quiet. I love her. I love Jamie's sister Jenny for the same reason.

I will most definitely be continuing the series!!!

It was very slow. HOURS in and almost nothing had happened. And suddenly, some suggestions and plot points of almost SA and touching without consent happens and explained as though it was normal. Made me uninterested.
