This book was chosen for the Book Study PD we did at my school for the 23-24 school year. This story is amazing, and Brandon is an excellent storyteller and teacher. I highly, highly recommend reading this poignant story.

4.5 stars. The first half was 5 stars and the second half was 4 stars. Wished he had continued with the same level of detail with his transition and struggles into college. He rushed over how he did in college, graduating, living, and working. He's only 5'7. I wish he went more into detail of how he worked out and trained himself how to dunk as a freshman. But it was inspiring because if this real n word can master English and go through college then I can learn stupid accounting and get my stupid MBA.

At least he narrated his own book. I think he would have done well to have waited, though, and published later in life at least get into his 30s. You don't wanna jump the gun like [a:Lindsay Stirling|1393414|Lindsay Stirling|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] and [a:Rich Froning|6857362|Rich Froning|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png].

I hate real n words. I hate gangs. They ruin everything that is good and potentially decent in this life. I just saw a meme where a dude with down syndrome involved in a gang killed 2 people. You'd think the author would be a much bigger advocate against gangs and trying to disrupt their system but he hasn't mentioned it at all since he got clean. I guess in his own way by educating the blacks he is doing such that.

Ironic that his gang friend saw his talent and actually encouraged him to go to college to play ball and stop doing drugs. All it takes is someone to believe in you.

Notes:

Representation is the lens through which we aspire. Passion is born through exposure through affirmation.

You don't have their attention until you have their hearts.

I want to watch The Ron Clark Story. Which is handy because Matthew Perry just died.

Breathtaking, is the only word I have to describe after reading this book. Every single word in this book carries weight! It took me time to reflect and ponder over the personal narratives in this book. It was inspirational to see a black success story and how he is graciously giving back to his community. Must read x 10!!
