This novel is so unlike my norm and yet, I could not get it out of my thoughts while working, when I had to stop at night, when I had to run errands. There were a few parts where I felt the author waxed on a bit too much over an event but overall, everything worked.  The author's characters are exceptional in their creation and their internal motivations and musings are laid out bare for the reader. I loved that! (Hence the 5) Some might think it is a novel of a dysfunctional family but it is actually a novel of family love, jealousy, and stress. Yes it is long at 532 pages but well worth reading. It probably isn't for everyone. I cannot believe this is the author's first book.
