So I had tried reading this book once before and couldn't get into it. SOMEHOW I finished it this time and this is all I have to show for it... 2 stars.

UGH.

First off it couldn't hold my attention. It seemed the author wrote in a monotone voice. It was just sluggish and it dragged. THEN it picked up....then died... I can't believe this is a series! blah! I wanted to hit my head against a wall or desk or something because I couldn't get into it. I was bored reading this book. SO why did I finish it? ONE BLOODY CHARACTER grabbed my attention. Finn...

Sorry to all the fans...

I didn't care for the protagonist of this story Cate. She seemed whiny and overbearing. Granted she felt she had a duty and responsibility to help and protect her sisters since the death of their mother. I just couldn't relate I guess? She just seemed annoying!

Finn was the only interesting character although I felt the author decided to change her mind on what kind of character Finn is suppose to be. Bookwormish/nerd or love of books with a strong masculine character. I dunno I felt he started one way and ended another without any character development, it was like he just changed overnight? What's up with that?!

Whatever.

And what is up with this RANDOM out of nowhere sister who reads ROMANCE novel all of a sudden gay?! HUH?! It didn't make sense! nothing against gay people I just didn't get where THAT came from!

Again whatever.

Overall: the idea of the story was great. Witches in hiding while a brotherhood full of hypocrisy tries to take over the world sort of thing.

Sexual Content: moderate (PG)
Language: mild
Violence: mild
Drugs/Alcohol: mild

I really enjoyed this one. Cate's devotion to her sisters, the evil of the Brotherhood, the sinister secrets of the Sisterhood...I was sucked in. I am NOT excited that I have to wait until February 2013 for the next book!
adventurous dark emotional funny hopeful fast-paced

Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Maura. If I was your sister, would have beat your ass pages ago

Good read. The ending was a little heartbreaking. :[ Definitely reading the next one.

Oh my god I just loved this book and I can't wait for the next one!

This really is as good as everyone told me it was going to be! I'm so relieved I can read the sequel straight away!

Overall, the book has a well rounded plot that ends with a colossal cliffhanger, believable and fully fleshed characters and great world building. It was thrilling and hooking to the last page.

The world was reminiscent of The Handmaid's Tale in which a strict patriarchy with an obnoxious religion cult that dominates the world. The Brothers, having destroyed the previous governing body of The Daughters of Persephone, comprised of witches, have established a reign of terror for women. Not allowing them to read, own property, have jobs or fall out of their assigned roles in the slightest. There are daily abductions of girls and women accused of witchcraft, most of them false, but there truly are witches in hiding among the populace.

The main characters revolve around Cate, the eldest of three witch sisters. I will not spoil any details for you, but there is a prophecy, there is love, there are political plays, and there is a lot of growing and evolving of the characters through the book.

Recommend it to all witch lovers that like a dash of historical in their fantasy. The setting is not strictly any given time, but a feeling of Victorian or Tudor times in the description of dresses and housing. Enjoy!

I think I've found the book that is going to pull me out of my reading slump! Read this beauty in a day and I can't wait for the second in the series. Pulled me in right from the start, I fell in love with the Cahill sisters, and Finn, and even Paul. All are carving their ways into my heart!

2.5 to 2.75. I wish there had been more magic and less love triangles. Plus, Cate wasn't a likeable character since she was angry all the time and constantly yelling at everyone for no reason.
