The story started really strong. I was hooked with the premise in chapter 1, because three delinquents rubbing their one brain cell together to give advice? That is a wonderful premise! Then the second chapter only reinforced my excitement for the story. But as I kept reading, as the coincidences kept adding up, as the story began to explain and exposit rather than just lean into its strongest elements, being the premise of three delinquents giving advice, my interest waned. The last chapter is where everything fell apart as we took out so much time to exposition dump. What a let down of a story on an utterly cliched ending. Everything did not need to be connected. Had this just been a series of unrelated stories connected around the general store giving advice, it would have been much better. Chapter 1 was the strongest, but chapter 2 and 4 were also good. Chapter 3 and 5 dampened by interest and just had me skimming to the end. Borrow from a library instead of buy and only if the initial premise is interesting to you.

Historical fantasy novel that reflects the state of Japan's economy from 1980 to 2012: a magical mailbox creates a bubble in time that connects past and present with letters. As more letters appear, you see how the characters' lives intersect. The convergence point is very moving!

Content notes: contains themes of death, suicide, aging parents
