The Monsters and Gargoyles series really might be one of my favorite series of all time! The series has a very strong female empowering vibe and each and every book again I'm blown away by the strength of all these women breaking free of whatever or whoever was holding them back. So, when I got an e-mail from BookSprout that I could get an ARC of the 7th book in this series, I didn't hesitate and clicked download right away.

Of course we had already met Andros and Hecate in the previous books in this series and I was so incredibly happy that finally we would get to see them breaking free of the cruel environment they were living in. And although we had already seen them, in this book we got to see even more of the cruelties they had to endure and the circumstances they had to deal with. There were a few moments I really felt a little sick and I never wished anyone a happier ending than Hecate.

Andersen manages on top of that to really make the plot exciting and intense. The entire trip from the Underworld, where of course no one is allowed to look back (for very obvious reasons) is a really thrilling ride, especially because just like the main characters in the story we are constantly in the unknown of whether or not the rescued soul is still following. I mean, I've read the previous books, I know how it was most likely gonna end and yet I had this racing heart in my chest and couldn't stop reading until I got to the last chapters.

I also really love how there is always a layer of politics in the books, and it's usually not a really pretty layer. Especially the chapters from the villains' point of view really create a little extra tension and it reminds us that the stakes of what our heroes are doing are really high. I have to admit that the characters don't feel too original anymore (but one can wonder if that's even possible after so many books in a series with the same premise), but in the end I still grew kinda fond of them!

And after that epilogue I'm really excited about the next book in the series. I was already hoping she'd get her own book!

Really would have thought a witch would be MORE powerful when gestating an undead baby gargoyle

Lots of action but a little flat on the nuances of the plot. We didn't get to see much of Andros interacting with the rest of the group as he was a ghost traveling on his own for 50% of the book as they were working to lead him out of the Underworld. I liked Blaise's character, but we didn't get to see many supernatural powers other than Hecate's random magic. It was nice to learn how they escaped the Underworld, we finally see some more one-dimensional bad guys defeated, and we get some foreshadowing of the characters in the next book, but I don't feel like we learned much about any of the characters.

This was an okay filler book for the series.

This got four stars from me because Hecate was pretty bad ass. The one main issue I had is that it ended pretty fast. You had this big long drawn out story and two pages...boom done everything is great and wonderful. I’m looking forward to the next one! The sex is still pretty cringe though.
