Humorous, not as full of difficult rhymes as some Dr. Seuss books. Very basic colors aside from the focus of the story.

I enjoyed it the first few times as a child, but got bored with it fairly quickly...much sooner than I did with his Cat in the Hat books.

We only read this one because it seems logical to read it before it's sequel -- the one about the ooblek -- but it was surprisingly funny and fun to read aloud to a small human who stayed interested through the entire story. (It's kind of a big deal for her to actually stay still and interested for this long.) I knew going in that this is a prose work; that could be disappointing if I hadn't known.

I still have several burning questions about these hats. What made this strange event happen? Why did it take so long for the hats to start looking different? Couldn't Bartholomew have kept all of the hats himself to sell? Surely they would have sold like hotcakes once King Derwin bought one and made Bartholomew a nice mint, but I suppose 500 gold coins for the best one is nothing to sniff at.

I love this story, and it was fun to revisit it with C, even if it's a bit beyond him still. :)

My students found this book morbid and boring.

"The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is the story of a young peasant and his unjust treatment at the hands of King Derwin."

What an odd book. Though to be fair it is Dr. Seuss, but not really a typical Seuss book. This one had lots and lots of words. And lots of hats. So one day a copy of a boy's hat just started appearing on his head just as he took it off for the King. No explanation for why this happened. Silly idea but written seriously. Could have been shorter and with more clever text and better art. But interesting nonetheless.
