Simon has spent the last six months hunting Incarnations, and has begun to realize that his power alone won’t be enough to stop a true enemy.
Leah is queen over a nation of refugees, driven from their homes by the power of Territories gone mad.
Alin rules his city with an iron fist, imposing the virtues of Elysia on an imperfect population.
Now, the three must stand united as the balance of the world shifts once more. A greater threat looms, and it has made its presence known...
The Incarnations are missing.

I also think he could have developed some ideas more: given us more rooms of the house, developed the relationship between the two queens and the character of the incarnations better etc., but there is only so much room to work with in such a story and so he had to get on with the plot.
In any case, I liked the character work and the fights a lot. Three books in the antagonists are still very varied, gripping and very relatable and the protagonists continue to navigate their loyalties and their duties and beliefs. For a fantasy series it’s remarkably un-tribal, less focused on power-ups than relationships, though there are a lot of power-ups too and he writes excellent fight scenes.
It’s just that in most cases fights without context are not interesting to watch. You need some background to the characters and the world because that’s what creates the stakes for the fight in the first place. And this author understands that. Now, this doesn’t mean you have to get all Sanderson and have literal thousands of pages of set-up for a character. In fact, the character work is brief but extremely effective. Kudos on that and it’s honestly a notch above the Cradle series though the later novels of that get progressively better at this.
I’m off to read the short stories because they’re included with the novels.
