I absolutely loved it! One of my favorite reads this year. It is long…but I wouldn’t remove a single thing. Each moment seemed important. Radar alone would have made me finish the book even if I wasn’t excited about it. But a fantasy story that involves a boy and his GERMAN SHEPHERD (Radar) - say no more!!! Mr. Bowditch’s death still got me despite knowing it was coming as stated on the back of the book but it didn’t make it any less devastating. You fall in love with that grumpy old man quickly. It’s worth it to keep going! Trust me! Keep going just to know what happens to Radar, but the rest of the story is amazing. When Charlie leaves Empis, I felt like I was leaving Empis as well. It was such a good blend of fairy tales mixed with the everyday world we know. LOVED IT!

2.5 to 3 stars. A great start that became a slow burn, building up to what I thought was going to be an amazing crossing of our world to a fairytale one. Unfortunately, this didn't happen. King lost me in the second half of the book. There were unnecessary details and repeated commentary. I know the author is well established and considered a master storyteller, but some actual editing by his editor would have helped this novel. Too long by far.
