Another spectacular book by Anthony Ryan! Now I'm ready for the Queen of Fire.

Okay so... this was boring.
This was in its way to be one of the worst books I read, mainly because I couldn't care less for what happens to these characters. And. It. Was. So. Freakin. Long.
What saved it however, is that I read a summary of what this book is mainly about, and it get's a half star for that, because if you cut all the boring stuff in it's heart this is a good story.

Blood Song (book 1 in the series), was good, it wasn't the best but it had potential, Tower Lord however was a gigantic step back, a huge part of that is because of the ending of Blood Song, and maybe this is just me but when the two characters that I loved most besides Vaelin in the first book aren't present much (one is just mentioned and the other isn't there much and they are supposed to be the love interest and the MC's best friend.) I'm gonna start looking for action, and while there's much of it, it wasn't well done, which leads me to my next and most important point, this felt like an instruction manual.

In this book we get multiple POVs and not just Vaelin's as it was the case in book 1. We get to meet new characters (interesting but not much relatable, and I don't understand for the life of me why they get the upper hand over the old good characters from book 1). Add to it the Vernier's chapters (which unlike book one aren't telling Vaelin's story but adding just another POV to the book) which created a great confusion about the timeline of the events and you get a book that doesn't make you live the story but just tells you one. That's what I meant by instruction manual.
In no point during the 600 pages of this did I went "oh what's going to happen?" or "I wonder how this goes?" I felt so disengaged from what's happening in the book, and that's one of the worst things that can happen when you're reading.
I would've been better off hearing commentary of my daily life, and that's the worst insult I can give this book.

Also I think the author assumed I'd remember much of the things that happened in book 1 so he didn't reference or remind us of most events, he assumed too much in my case. if you ever want to read this make sure you don't space the books out.

Another thing I want to say is I really wanted to DNF this multiple times while I read, and I don't DNF books because I hate not knowing what happens in the end. That being said I will not read the third book, I simply cannot go thru another 600 pages of agony. It's absolutely not worth it, and that speaks volumes how boring and disappointing this book was.

I have to admit I was initially a little disappointed with this but, but it definitely got better. I think my main issue was the switch from one character perspective in the first book to four character perspectives in this book - it threw me a little bit. It took me a little while to get into the story line of the other characters, but I would say after 200ish pages it started to improve for me. I felt a little disconnected from some of the characters, but generally the character arcs were well done. The plot was generally engaging, although as I've said to took me a little while to get into it fully. Overall it was good, but I definitely preferred the first book. I am interested to see how things conclude in the next book.

Just finished it. Aigh! Where's the third book?!
Checking online...Coming in July. Grumble.

Okay, some tiny bit of detail. Anthony Ryan has stepped up his game. He's writing tighter and leaner. And the story is getting much bigger. And the ending...and the title of book three...

So here I am, waiting for [b:Queen of Fire|18405221|Queen of Fire (Raven's Shadow, #3)|Anthony Ryan|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1417350958s/18405221.jpg|26039753].

uhuh at first i didn't seem to get into it bc everytime it was a chapter of frentis and "the woman" ("ew" was my main opinion of her) i just stopped reading but when we got rid of her i guess it changed everything!!!!! coincidentally when we got rid of her the war started and i love that so. you know.
but! anyway! i love reva!! at first i was like "she has a crush on alornis i'm not making this up" but then it turned out she really did like girls! i love when unexpected things like this happen. and i love reva and how her views changed and how she cares about everyone and also how she got everyone to follow her into battle!!!! my fave was when in the middle of the siege she had to force herself to stop smiling bc she was like "oooook but i got laid last night and I WANT TO DO IT AGAINNNNN" reva pls. and now she's the governess AND she has a girlfriend!!! idk i'm so happy.
and LYRNAAAAAAA MY LOVE MY SUN AND STARS. in the first book lyrna was my fave even though we saw her like three times but if you had asked me who i wanted a pov of her it would have been her. it's like i ask for something, and it happens!! idk I LOVE HER she's so great her pov was great the best 10/10 truly LRYNA AL TIEREN IS A STAR. and now she's queen and of course i love queens and she barely has a realm and she has TO GET IT BACK and of course i am all hashtag emotions about it. (and when she was like "im gonna watch ur city burn" sTOP, STOP)
and obviously i don't even want to say this bc hashtag trash but, UGH, vaelin, i love you always forever.

tbh wtf is this review (if you can call it that which, no) and WHY that ending and WHY DO I HAVE TO WAIT. and i can't wait!!!! and the book comes out one day after my birthday which i consider a good sign (of what i don't know but it surely is one.)

but yeah anyway. famous last words: I LOVE EVERYONE.

DNF @15%- It's been too long since I read Blood Song, and now I can't remember enough to get fully engaged in the story! I'm gonna have to come back to this one later lol
