The first time I read this book I was unaware of the reception it had received, generally viewed as a disappointment compared to Blood Song. I gave it 4/5 stars as moderately enjoyable. In preparation to read the latest two Vaelin books I decided to reread the original trilogy, finding out that while many people love book 1, books 2 and 3 are considered let-downs. While I understand that this book is quite different from Blood Song and much of what people (myself included) love in the novel is missing here, I actually still think this book stands decently on its own, and I think it’s still an enjoyable read. I’m doubling down on 4 stars here.

Das Cover des zweiten Teiles gefällt mir noch viel besser, als das des ersten. Mir gefällt die Grundfarbe des Bildes sehr gut. Es wirkt so viel ruhiger, als die anderen beiden Cover. Durch den angelegten Pfeil wirkt es etwas bedrohlicher, als das Cover des zweiten Bandes.
Meine Meinung
Über zwei Jahre ist es nun schon her, dass ich in "Das Lied des Blutes" zum ersten Mal die Geschichte von Vaelin Al Sorna gelesen habe. Obwohl ich den ersten Band regelrecht verschlungen habe, kam ich nie dazu den zweiten und dritten Teil zu lesen. Nachdem ich es nun endlich geschafft habe, muss ich ehrlich sagen, ich bin froh, dass ich gewartet habe bis auch der dritte Band erschienen war.
Band zwei (und auch drei) unterscheiden sich in sofern von dem ersten Teil, das sie nicht mehr nur als Vaelins Sicht erzählt werden. Es gibt immer noch die alt bewährter Struktur der fünf Teile, von denen jeder circa 10 Kapitel enthält und einen Teil aus der Sicht von Lord Verniers. Jedes Kapitel wird aus einer anderen Sicht erzählt. Neu lernen wir Reva kennen, eine junge Frau, die sich auf gemacht hat um das Schwert ihres Vaters zu suchen. Nachdem sie versucht Vaelin anzugreifen, nimmt dieser sie unter seine Fittiche. Obwohl sie sich am Anfang gegen ihn wehrt, wird sie recht schnell einsichtig und so entwickelt sich eine starke Freundschaft zwischen den beiden. Reva verbindet auch sehr viel mit Alornis, Vaelins kleiner Halbschwester. Den kleinen Wirbelwind, der im ersten Teil nur kurz erwähnt wird, nimmt in Band zwei und drei eine wesentlich wichtigere Rolle ein.
Desweiteren lernen wir auch Lady Dahrena besser kennen. Genau wie Vaelin ist sie auch begabt, oder vom Dunkel besessen, wie man bei Vaelins Volk sagt. Sie habe ich sofort ins Herz geschlossen und finde auch immer noch, dass sie eine der besten Figuren aus dem Buch war. Gerade für Vaelin ist sie ein großer Gewinn.
Eine weitere Figur, die wir im ersten Teil schon gut kennen gelernt haben und die jetzt in Band zwei eine eigene Erzählperspektive bekommt ist Bruder Frentis. Ich mochte ihn vom ersten Moment an sehr und ihn nun, nach dem Krieg so gequält zu sehen, hat mir beinahe das Herz gebrochen. Neben Nortah hat er sich für mich zu einer meiner Lieblingsfigur entwickelt.
Abschließend möchte ich noch etwas zu Prinzessin Lyrna sagen. Sie nimmt ebenfalls einen großen Part in dem Buch ein. Mochte ich sie am Anfang noch sehr gerne, erschien sie mir im Laufe des Buches immer rücksichtsloser zu werden und ich konnte Vaelins bedenken bezüglich ihren Zielen sehr gut verstehen. Trotzdem finde ich, dass sie eine außergewöhnliche Entwicklung durchgemacht hat und eine tolle Figur ist.
Die Welt nach dem Krieg ist völlig zerstört. Vaelins Brüder, so fern sie noch leben, sind völlig verstreut über den Kontinent und zum Teil verschollen. Der Zeitsprung von fünf Jahren wird meiner Meinung nach nicht oft genug erwähnt, das kann man schon mal vergessen. Es hat sich viel verändert und wird sich noch viel verändern. Was sich in diesem Band bereits andeutet ist, dass er quasi nur noch aus großen Schlachten und Krieg besteht. Ich hätte mir gewünscht, etwas mehr über das "normale" Leben zu erfahren, stattdessen hetzt man mit den Figuren von einer zur nächsten Schlacht und weiß gar nicht mehr, wo einem der Kopf steht. Viele Figuren sind ja bereits im ersten Teil gestorben und leider muss ich sagen, dass es im zweiten Band nicht besser wird.
Zu meinem Bruder habe ich noch gesagt, wenn der Autor meine Lieblingsfigur sterben lässt, was zweitweise nicht überraschend gewesen wäre, lege ich das Buch weg und lese keine Seite mehr, zum Glück musste ich das nicht tun.
Der Schreibstil des Autors gefällt mir immer noch sehr gut. Ich finde das Buch lässt sich schön lese, die Namen mögen manchmal nicht so einfach sein, aber gefallen haben sie mir trotzdem sehr gut. Ich vergebe an dieses Buch allerdings nur vier von fünf möglichen Monstern, weil der erste Teil mit Abstand der Beste war.

I had a tough time with this one. The new POVs were not as interesting to me and I was somewhat bored with the overall plot. Not likely to continue with the series even though I thought Blood Song was amazing.

On my second read through, I found this one is my favorite in the series. For some reason I remembered all these event happening in Queen of Fire. Frentis is my fav character & my heart hurts everytime

4.75 Stars: An outstanding sequel to Blood Song, Tower Lord is far more epic and complex than the first instalment of the Raven's Shadow trilogy.
This book follows a different structure if you compare it with Blood Song: the story is told from the POV of many characters instead of only Vaelin Al Sorna's. I think that this was awesome because we get to know better a lot of secondary characters introduced in the first volume (Frentis and Lyrna grew a lot in this book; Vaelin wasn't as awesome as in the previous book but he's still a badass), and also introduced a strong female character called Reva which I really enjoyed reading.
On the other hand, while I thought that these points of view were awesome, it also makes the story to drag a bit, and that's the only reason why I don't rate it with five stars. The first half of the book was a little slow for me because it has a lot of set up, developing the story lines of each character. However, the second half is amazing. Each plot start converging giving way to an outstanding ending that left me as baffled as the one of the first book.
To sum up: Tower Lord is an excellent sequel, much more epic than Blood Song. It's not your typical transition book of a trilogy, which only serves as a bridge between the beginning and the ending, a lot of stuff happens in this book and Anthony Ryan managed to tie every loose end appropriately and leave enough room for the third book. I totally recommend these books, it is one of the best fantasy trilogies I've read so far.

A strong second book in the trilogy, one that improves on the first considerably and leaves you desperate for the finale.
Strongly reminded me of David Gemmel's Legend in places, with well-done battle scenes. Ryan had some great female characters in the first book, but that's a strength that he's taken to the max with the second. Villains and heroes, women make this story great. (As does Al Sorna, of course.)

I almost listened to some of the more negative reviews on this second book. Almost, and I'm glad I ignored them. I really enjoyed this 2nd book as much as the first. I enjoyed the build up and reading more about some old characters and plenty of new ones. I've already started the 3rd and last book and can not wait to see how it ends.
