Better than most 2nd books in a series. Often the middle book in a trilogy just serves to build up to the final book, but this one didn't get that feeling until the last 150 pages. Kept interesting by the addition of a new major character, but heavy handed with the violence & bloody imagery. Not as good as Blood Song, but still very interested to see what happens next.
I found this to be so much better than I feared after hearing so much negativity about this series past book 1. I think the multiple pov’s really expanded the world and introduced us to some very important characters as well as allowing us to spend some time with characters that we loved and already were familiar with.
I’m very excited to move onto Queen of Fire next month to finish out our readalong.

I thought this was an outstanding middle-book, which almost seamlessly continued the story from Blood Song onwards. I particularly liked that the focus shifted from Vaelin superstar to different PoVs including the strong viewpoints of Lyrna and Reva. Woo, there's even a positive gay relationship by the end of the book. My favorite PoV might have been Frentis though. You can't help but feel terrible for the poor, abused slave and his utterly terrifying mistress without a name.
Looking forward to the conclusion!

The fem voices were a welcome addition to the series! However, the pacing of the first book was such a deluge of energy and growth (being a coming of age story of sorts) that it proved a hard act to follow.
At times the story (and multiple POVs) felt disjointed and harried. But, as expected, the characters were well developed and the fight scenes were visually executed!
I eventually lost track of all the characters, to be honest, and found myself rifling through pages to nail down all the "A" names.
My only real gripe is this (small spoiler)

Great Story
Overall, I loved this book. I didn't care much about the multiple lines. Mainly because I loved Vaelin's story and the beginning was a bit slow. Once I got to the middle, the story was great! I cannot wait to read the last book and see how Vaelin's story ends!

4.5⭐️
I liked this better than the first.
Has more female lead action, but continues the primary male's story.
Unpredictable, well written, though some of the characters are becoming a little too alike and predictable in how they will react to the unexpected circumstances.
Still, the story rocks and makes up for some of the, small, lapses.
Library is open again, need the next book!!
