Gonna go with a 4.3 for now...

Really, really liked this far more than I thought I would considering what people have said. Stunning swords & sorcery conclusion, awesome characters and setting, though I had some issues. Lyrna and Reva were way too quick to pick up various different forms of martial prowess. It was kinda jarring, really. Reva was able to put a shaft in someone's neck from a fair distance after like 2 weeks of training (though I will admit there are some passages later that could potentially have me convinced she is (very minor spoiler)

). In Lyrna's case it's more spoilery so I'll avoid talking further about it. They were great characters otherwise, though, and I have no qualms about reading Queen of Fire.

Steven Brand is the perfect narrator for Vaelin, and his voice is very easy to listen to, but he's in the narrator-narrator camp (rather than actor-narrator) so it was a bit tough to differentiate voices occasionally.

Not sure if I like the choice to have Frentis care/ be in love with his rapist.

I gave up about two fifths through - I just didn't get in to it. I lost control of the characters and didn't care what happened. Looks like I am completely out of sync with most other reviews!

Let the guessing games begin. Anyone want to share their theories?

One major topic of discussion would have to be Caenis. I'm sure many readers thought he would be the brother possessed by the one who waits, but as that is not the case, what do you think his deal is? He's very knowledgeable, is not affected by the killing of others, and he loves the royal family. He's all about the faith and the realm. Vaelin said he wondered what would happen if he interpreted the sound Caenis made as a laugh rather than a sigh, which is pretty much the origin for the suspicious analyzing of all of Caenis' moves by the readers. Anthony said that everything will change in Tower Lord, so maybe that means Vaelin doesn't merely part with the Order, but is going to clash with it? Caenis is the only one of the original brothers left in the Order and if Vaelin is fighting him, he's fighting the Order. Whether there's something "Dark" about Caenis or his past is also an interesting question and if anyone has some theories in that regard, feel free to voice them.

The other point I want to discuss is Reva, mentioned in the UK version of the blurb. Vaelin destroyed her family, who is she? The only suggestion I've heard that could possibly fit is one of Hentes Mustor's 3 bastards, but I'm sure there's more to dig up. Whoever she is, it seems clear from the wording that she will reluctantly team up with Vaelin, in one way or another.

The Raven's Shadow books are first and foremost simply entertaining. Anthony Ryan has a strong and engaging voice that makes these books eminently readable. The key draw for me are the characters - they are all richly developed and fun and engaging to read. Whilst Vaelin is a bit of a super character, the others are all nicely flawed and limited. Even Vaelin, despite his apparent immense abilities, still finds himself frequently in the wrong place, so there is definitely a sense of risk carried through the book.

As I said in my Blood Song review, these books are not innovative or boundary breaking, but they are extremely well written. I would rather take a well written and enjoyable book over a truly innovative one. Hard to put down and a pleasure to read. I look forward to reading the final book in the trilogy!
