I got completely caught up in this book. It is a strange mixture of detective novel and soap opera, with exaggeration almost reaching the point of magical realism at one point ( I can't say where because it would be a spoiler). There appears to be no crime and not much to detect and yet there is still the same sense of tension as if there were and there are quite a few cliff hangers. I can't wait to read Star of the Sea, which is supposed to be his best

Picked this up at Edinburgh Book Festival - I liked it, rather than loved it. I felt some of the characters were a bit one dimensional and I couldn’t quite fathom them or emphasis with their choices. Ellen, why did she stay with the guy until she’d no life left? Martin, no chance he’d had been relied on by anyone? And as for the doc- please? That said the Irish landscape was the big winner and some evocative passages about Irish historical context.

Extremely powerful and recommended to others, even if you've read Star Of the Sea and think you know O'Connor
