Overall I think it was a pretty good book. The twist at the end really made it up for some of the other areas that it was lacking in. As far as a ghost story tied into the mafia I thought that was a really interesting premise because you don't get to see that genre come to life too much.
I felt that there was a good understanding development of plot of characterization. The use of vocabulary and descriptions you're really well thought out and presented a in-depth look at the characterizations and the analysis of the psychological effects of a haunting. So it did seem like it had advanced understandings in those ways.
I gave it three out of five stars because for me the overuse of a body part name by one of the characters made it feel that they didn't have the exemplary vocabulary that we are made to believe that they did. What I'm speaking of is the main character Jared who is an 18 year old boy that makes multiple comments on the main female protagonist's chest. While I was 18 year old boy and I remember how that is, thinking about sex all the time, the way that the author continuously use the word nipples was off-putting to me. I also understand that Jared is a neurodivergent, socially inept, person so his attitudes and focuses might be on other things, but at 18, I I feel that the the boy's mind would be more attracted to the breast as a whole and not just the nipples. I felt that the way that this was put forth in the book could possibly be disingenuous to female readers, of course that is just my opinion so any female readers can tell me to bugger off.
I feel that also since it was a first edition of the book, that maybe some of the editing and formatting didn't necessarily get done. In that I mean there are parts where it doesn't seem to have a good editing or formatting in the print book. So if there were maybe second edition where the red pen of editing had come back in and made some changes, that might improve that.
What does save it though as I've said before is the understanding of the psychological and physiological effects of seeing how this hunting is portrayed. So I would recommend this to anyone who does like hunting books or paranormal psychological thrillers because I do feel that the author really did get well-developed with those aspects. I think that the way that the author presented the what was also a great development because it allowed for the continuous growth of those characters. And reflected how they're decisions later in the book were affected by their past and the present situation they are found in. So if you like ghost stories with a mafia tie-in this book could be for you.
