4 stars.

Coyote Moon is a very good Buffy novel. It's set during the summer of Season 1. Buffy never left Sunnydale to visit her father in this novel though.

I really enjoyed the shifter aspect and I wish they did something with that on the show.

The relationship between Xander & Buffy is strained, which is a nice continuation of what happened in the finale of season 1.

There were a couple things here and there that I either didn't catch or it wasn't there for me to catch. Why the shifters wanted to raise
SpoilerSpurs from the dead, it didn't seem like working in his show was all that great for them? He would get the fame and glory while they got nothing or next to nothing
. It wasn't clear whether or not Xander and Willow were under a spell, at times it did, especially with Xander who was very single minded and obsessive about Rose, while at other times it seemed like a normal attraction. So I wish that had been cleared up a little more.

Other than those things, this was a very enjoyable post season 1 book and it broke the pattern for me when it comes to Season 1 novels, last 2 were about 2 or 2.5 stars.

I think maybe I'd expected too much from this book
I never watched the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So I'd hoped this book would bridge that for me - give me some history and some drive or want to watch the series. Instead, this book started out with no history and no information. With just a "The Slayer" kind of flourish, it jumps into a mystery and a very uninteresting story. It feels really obvious what's going on and so it just drags for another 100 pages.

Plus, Buffy...kind of sucked. She was self-center and very self-important. She was pretty sure she was the best thing in he world and seemed to need her friends and even strangers to acknowledge how great she was.

This definitely did not drive me to want to see the show or read more books.

It is very refreshing to read Buffy themed novel after so many years. Since this one fits somewhere into season 1. it was extra interesting. I had some issues with imagining some of the characters acting like they do in this story.

Willow and Xander fall for some suspicious Carnival workers, Buffy knows something is wrong. Its not vampires this time, its shapeshifters. This is a fun quick read that feels like a fun filler episode. These books are great just to pick up and chill out.
