An enjoyable and not-too-taxing read, which is what I was after. The story is set in the ancient past and contains a hint of magic. Inanna is a girl with a deep connection to plants and nature. She is born into a nomadic tribe and is none too loved by her half-brother nor her step-mother, who suspect her of being part wolf.

After her sister is executed for adultery, Inanna flees from her people and falls in love with a man who belongs to a matriarchal, sexually-liberated society. Since she had already been married to an old man of her tribe, this can mean nothing but trouble after her brother finds her and brings her back home.

Inanna is the fulcrum when the two cultures finally collide in a clash that is really a conflict between larger, more mystical forces.

The whole time, I loved it. Fresh, villians that made sense and were actually frightening, a protagonist who felt realistic. Then it just kinda fell apart at the very end, Innana made some very stupid decisions form which I could see the outcome coming a mile away... And then Mackey ties the whole book up with a sad but neat little ribbon. It was so good for so long
... Until suddenly it wasn't.
