The fluidity of the two times was masterfully done. There was no point in the book out of place or awkward. It was cute in a way how the wine 'spoke' throughout the story and gave foreshadowing. It was also rather nice how the first book showed up in the form of Josephine. The ending of the book was not what I had expected but was all the same expected in a way that only intuition tells.

This was not an easy book for me to get into. About halfway through it really picked up and pulled me in. The ending made the struggles at the beginning worth it.

I had trouble getting into this book. I read about 3/4 of it for my book club, but never finished it.

I always come back to this book when I’m in need of a comfort read. Joanne Harris has a certain way of looking through nostalgia and memory in such a manner that is soft, bittersweet and glowing.

I'm not a clever, wordy review writer. So all I'll say about this book was it wasn't necessarily complicated or nail biting, but I enjoyed it. Plus,I'm always intrigued by that whole 'tortured writer living in a vacant room in the Med somewhere' tale!

Joanne Harris is a fantastic writer, but I felt that in this novel, she was trying to force something that wasn't there, and the story became flat because of it. Through her other writings she's become known for that "magical" element that makes characters bigger than life... And she gave that concept a good try here. However, I think she tried too hard to explain herself. When she spelled out (several times) that the specter was an astral traveler, not a ghost or even a figment of the main character's imagination, it took a lot of the mysterious, magical feel right out of the story and left it a but deflated. That said, it's still a worthwhile read, simply for the exquisite writing style, if nothing else.

A bit of a slow start but once I was into it a few chapters I was hooked.

Good book not as good as some of her others but still a good book. Harris always does a steller job at mixing magic, food, a mystery.
