I picked up this book looking for a cozy, nostalgic, 80's/90's fantasy read. While this had some of those elements, the good was overshadowed by a number of things:
  1. The dialogue (at least from the three main characters) was stuffy, formal, and overly philosophical. Dialogue scenes were basically prose, characters making lengthy speeches back and forth at one another. I felt my eyes glazing over whenever any two of the main characters interacted.
  2. There's some blatantly homophobic comments from the main character, where she assumes another character is gay (because God forbid a man not be interested in her; he must just not like women) and then she goes on a rant about it. This should have been edited out.
  3. The Act Three sexual assault -- this also should have been axed in the editing process, for so many reasons.
Other than that, the world building was interesting and unique, and the soft magic system was fun and light-hearted.
I will give Ms. Green credit for writing the classic ACOTAR bait and switch (
sunshiney first love interest gets swapped out for mr. tall dark and handsome
) decades before SJM. She was ahead of her time there; I just wish she had been ahead of her time when it came to some other topics.

Quite a light romance. Haliand is the daughter of the Moon who has to chase the missing Great Flame of the Moon along with Jentris the Sun Prince and a mysterious bandit from Earth called Skyhawk.

It's a bit weak really, Haliand is a bit light and while she does grow a bit seems to be more worried about what she's wearing than the problem at hand. Readable but nothing exceptional.
