[Probably Still the Chose One](https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/probably-still-chosen-one/) is a lovely fantasy short story. Given the choice of reading the Narnia books or this story, I'd go with the story, which goes on about many of the same things (but then again, I never liked Lewis and his Christianity-inserts).

This is yet another proof that when it comes to good stories, size doesn’t matter. A well-done shorty can have all the development and the punch of a doorstopper, if done right.

This one is definitely done right.

This story is funny and delightful while managing to simultaneously be serious and thoughtful. It’s a novel’s worth in a few pages, really.

At eleven, Corrine became the Chosen One, taking a portal below her kitchen sink into the magical Land of Nibiru where a war is being waged, and from where the High Priests return her temporarily back home after a year, with the promise to return for her in a week. But time flows differently here, and years pass, and Corrine is twenty-two now and a single mother of four, just managing, thanks for asking. It’s real world stuff now, and life demands the full attention, and childhood dreams need to be forgotten, and sacrifices made for that childhood dream are weighing on her shoulders now. And then the dreams of Nibiru start and the portal under the sink seems to be back. And then... but you just have to read it.
“Or brassieres. You’re not supposed to have those either. Or opinions. Did I say that already?”

“It is not out of the ordinary to pack a brassiere,” Corrina said. “Or tampons. I had no idea how long I’d be here. I also brought a diaper bag. Does that bother you, too?”

Love it!

4 stars.
