A lightweight, entertaining piece. I pictured Denzel as Carl Butler. The narration was conversational, like a memoir. More of a mystery than anything else, with two conspiracies going on to complicate the protagonist’s investigation.
I liked the characters—the aliens, not so much as they were depicted. Just as ruthless as humans, but better motivation. Self-preservation over greed.
Humans as invaders, well, we’ve seen that here on earth. Fuck the natives for their natural resources and kick them in the head on your way out. Attack them for wanting to get rid of you.
The ending was less than satisfying but understandable. Not sure I will read the next offerings. Not sure I can enjoy the ups and downs of an eventually (I read the summaries of the next two books) disgraced officer who was trying to save humanity.
The writing was fine with the exception of the heavy use of the same words to describe when a person “drew their lips into a flat line.” A lot of flat line mouths in the story.
