I’ll start by disclaiming that I don’t like to rate memoirs because I’m in no position to be judging someone’s life story. I read this on audiobook. I did read Maid as well as watch the show. I feel as though the writing was similar except I felt Land was more fed up in this book, which makes sense. It’s a good social commentary on how our systems are poorly setup to support the poor. It also goes into the education system which can feel like a catch 22. You get thrown into debt if you get a degree, and you can’t easily get a job without a degree. I think it’s easy to judge Land’s decisions. I had to keep telling myself that she has been through so much trauma, which can make her drawn to similar types of abusive men. It was scary hearing about Daniel’s behavior after finding out about her baby. I appreciate the brief mention of white privilege and recognizing how much harder it can be for people of color. I do think the book jumped from one thing to another quickly, which could be confusing.

Land is a really good writer, but I didn’t love this one like I did Maid. I felt she put in a lot of filler in this one anticipating a 3rd book. However, her experiences in an elite creative writing program while trying to parent a child single-handedly should help others in that situation, as well as inform universities about what non-traditional students need in the way of support.
