The little girl in this book loses someone close to her and needs to figure out the grieving process. I love the way Jon Muth ties community together in the midst of grief. The illustrations are both luminous and heart breaking at the same time.

A well done adaptation of the original Buddhist story, in this case used to deal with a child's loss of a beloved pet. The illustrations are lovely and the story is simple without being simplistic.
Whether you think this is appropriative (it IS pretty white) or simply adapting a story for a specific purpose is up to you. While I did feel like the audience for this book is probably a white one (and not merely an English-speaking one), I felt like the story and message were so good it was still worth a 4-star rating. Again, YMMV. If you have a kid who's trying to deal with the death of a pet--or if you yourself are--it's worth checking this book out.

Teaching children about death is a tricky subject. This book shows that everyone deals with death at some point in their life.

A gentle introduction to children about the universality of grief and loss.

This book has gorgeous illustrations, and tells a gentle, universal story about grief. The author explains the Buddhist source material in a note at the end, but the message of acknowledging mortality, dealing with the brevity of time, and cherishing people you love is relevant for people of any belief background.

Very quiet story about a girl dealing with grief over the death of a pet. I love Muth’s books and have had success reading them with older children.
