This was cute. 2 stars seem low, but if this were out of 10, it would probably be a 4.5 or something. Not bad, but not amazing. I love a good fairytale even if this claims to not be one.

Hi. If you are Bettie Sharpe, can you write some more stories like this in point of view of other fairy tale characters? It was pretty much the bomb. Thanks! -Luxie

I can't rate this book more than three stars and really a 2.5 to be honest. I loved the idea of showing a darker side of fairy tales, and the explanation of how they came to be the way we know them. I don't think I liked the physical sacrifices the witches had to make. And I wasn't sure of the purpose of Ember's foot. She described herself so ugly, and I had a hard time connecting with her.

The whores were a nice addition. As well as the time with Rian. I felt like that moved quickly, but in the context of the few moments they had together, I understand.

This book was poorly edited, and I can't believe the author is okay with the typos.

I have always loved fairytale retellings. After discovering this novella on goodreads the summary had me instantly hooked. I put off reading it until I decided to pick it up really late tonight and I could not put it down. Ms. Sharpe's take on Cinderella's fairy tale was something completely different and I absolutely LOVED it. The heroine was such a badass b***ch and Prince charming is not as charming as you might think. Overall I would give this novella a 4.5 stars out of 5. :)

This is a dark and compelling retelling of cinderella. Everything is twisted around and it makes the story seem so fresh whilst still being recognisable as that classic fairy tale. Ember is not a sweet, innocent girl, victimised by her step sisters. She's a witch and gets on well with them.

The twist is obvious from a mile away and I wasn't a fan of Prince Chamring (he doesn't seem to acknowledge that what he's done with his power is wrong, there are definitely some compulsion/rapey undertones to his power)

I understand why the author would use the past tense as it gives the story a more fable-y feel. But I found myself disconnected from the characters. Also, there wasn't enough conflict between the characters.

3.5-4.

Despite the reviews, this is not erotica. Which could be a good or a bad thing, depending on what you were looking for. In fact, the sex is on par with (and probably less explicit) than your average regency romance novel.

What Ember is, is a pretty fun retelling of Cinderella. The plot wasn't filled with twists and turns (at least none that you probably couldn't see coming), but for a novella, I think it it did enough with the premise of the original fairytale to warrant the 40-60 minutes you'll spend reading the book, especially since it's free. Sharpe writes well, her characters are likable, and there was enough spark both within the romance and between the relationships between the rest of the cast that I would have gladly paid for this book. Overall, I'd recommend this for anyone who's a fan of fractured fairytales.

P.S It's no longer available on the author's website, but if you google around you should be able to find copies of this floating about.

Even though I figured out the twist I enjoyed how the whole book turned practically every fairy tale on it's head! fun read!
