To date, this is one of my favourite Jodi Meadows stories, and one of my favourite book finales of 2019. This world and its lore are so richly crafted, I will genuinely miss it. I loved the way the author dove deep into the lore and power of dragons in ways I never imagined or expected. The writing is beautiful and flowing and had me on the edge of my seat during the adventure and action scenes.

The characters, both new and old, are complex and layered. I adored the side characters, especially Aaru, though I confess I would love to know more about an empress since she is quite complex. Not quite a villain, not quite an antihero, and not quite a hero, but she is so interesting that her moments were among my most favourite in the book.

Of course, Mira remains the star. She's always been unique and so full of heart and kindness. She never falters. Watching her overcome her insecurities and personal strife make her easy to relate to. I love her to pieces, and am truly going to miss her and her adventures.

This trilogy was packed with magic in every aspect. From its actual magic, to its lore and creatures, to its characters, romance, triumphs, and sacrifices. Definitely one of my favourite trilogies of all time, and a must read for anyone who wants to be swept away in a truly majestic fantasy.

The Great Abandonment has begun and it has created shear panic among the Fallen Isle. Mira knows that her connection to the dragons is the key to stopping the destruction to save her people, but first she must find the bones of the first dragon, which of course is easier said than done. This leads her stepping into enemy territory, the Algotti Empire, to hopefully gain what she’s in search of and to put a stop to all the fighting. For a final novel in a trilogy, this was done well; it was a little on the long side, which caused plots to drag a bit, but for the most part the reader enjoyed this. There were definitely more dragons than either of the previous novels and that’s what this reader has been waiting for, to see the dragons. The whole plot with our main character, Mira and her connection with the dragons really played out well. The reader had no idea where it was going to go and it went in a direction that didn’t feel predictable. The ending was a little predictable in how happily ever after it felt, but the rest of the novel was good with its high stakes and action. The reader could have done without the romance plots, as they didn’t really do anything for them; if anything they didn’t feel a connection or a spark between the two characters ‘in love’, so that made it feel forced. Apart from that though, the characters were well developed, by the end we really got to know them and understand their reasoning’s behind why they did the things they did. The new characters that were introduced in this helped shape the course of the novel as the main characters had to use them as guides to try and fight for what they believed in. Sometimes things were a bit of a deception, which made things interesting, but sometimes they were genuine, which made it wholesome to read. But all the while, it was always fast-paced. Like the first novel in this trilogy, it pulled a lot from the Mortal Instruments in terms of words and places used, which kinda bummed the reader out because it made this feel less original than it could have been. The second novel didn’t really mention much of it so the reader thought it would be a first novel thing only, but it turned up here. But that aside, this still turned out to be a good story; the reader wasn’t sure at first, but this was a decent trilogy full of twists, turns and eventually dragons.

I started last year by reading the first book of this series, and started this year by reading the last one. This was an intense ride from beginning to end, and even when I was fairly positive what the ending would be, I was surprised by the final twist at the end, one that should have been fairly obvious with hindsight.

It was a good conclusion to the trilogy, I really enjoyed seeing Mira's story from beginning to end, and how far she's come without losing any of the things that made her... her.

I read this almost in one sitting, so yay me. Pretty easy to read, all in all a nice conclusion to the series. My only qualm about it was the ending because it felt rushed. I felt like I needed one or two chapters after the last one to explain things in a more detailed way. There were a few things that needed... more. What happened to the governments? Are there a new system or did people keep the previous one? Did people separate by isles again or just lived in one all together? What about the culture based in all the gods, did they just start anew or kept the traditions as they were even after what happened? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Other than those unanswered questions, it was a solid 4-star read for me.

More dragons! Dragons leaving! Yikes! This was a great end to the series. I really love the way Jodi Meadows can wrap up a series especially one about rebellion in such a way that it feels authentic and satisfying.
