Owl is one of my favorite characters to read about and while.I might not always agree with her choices, I know that I am always in for one hell of a ride and this book did not disappoint at all.

I have two main problems with this book. One is the main character. As many other reviewers have noted, she's annoying. Since no other character is this way, the author wrote her this way deliberately. Yet everyone loves her, despite everything being a pain.

The second is the game World Quest. A lot of time is spent on this game that frankly makes no sense. And yes the game is enough of a problem it's apparently the subject of the third book. But a game where the dungeon maps are exact replicas of actual archaeological sites?

Also, reading about characters play a game is not interesting.

Ehh.

The story is action packed and entertaining but I find Owl herself kind of annoying. However I probably would have given it 3 stars if not for a very minor thing that happened at the end to
Spoiler Captain. I LOVE Owl's cat. He is my favorite character and to have her give him up as payment for the deal she made to get the curse lifted just pissed me off. Sure she didn't actually realise Lady S would take her cat because when she promised her most treasured possession she actually meant of the treasure she had. BUT she didn't seem to fight it that hard. She didn't even try to make the argument that Captain is not a possession he is her family
Spoiler I know it is a minor plot point in the scheme of things but it just really bugged me.

You know that old expression: "they threw in everything but the kitchen sink"? Well, this book not only threw in the kitchen sink, they threw in the entire kitchen . . . and the bathroom . . . and the living room . . . and all the junk lying around the back yard.

I really liked the first book in this series. This book went a bit over the top for me. I enjoyed it, kind of, but by the end, I was beyond exhausted by the amount of shit Owl had dumped on her head. I mean, I get that this is a supernatural world where everyone is out for themselves, and has no problem taking advantage of the few humans running around their world, but this story just felt like the author intentionally tried to break Owl with the amount death, drama, chaos and mayhem she had to deal with. It was a great, exciting, well conceived story, it was just too much for me.

It never stopped. There wasn't a single minute in this story [I listened to it as an audio book and the narrator did a great job just as an aside] where Owl wasn't on the knife's edge of dying, or worse. I don't mind a story where the protagonist has a lot to deal with, but everyone has limits, and I like my loved main characters to at least occasionally catch a break and have at least a brief period of respite and some moments where good things happen. Neither Owl or the reader get a single second of breathing room here. Some readers may love that, me not so much.

I probably won't continue with this series. It's a little too exhausting for me.
