I think I can officially say that Skye Kilaen is one of my favorite authors ever. Never have I felt more seen than when I’m reading her writing. Gosh, and the characters, the communication-! I’m getting ahead of myself. One thing at a time!

Shake Things Up is written in third-person from the perspective of one of the main characters at any given time. I just think that’s neat. Skye’s writing is so easy to read without feeling juvenile. It’s not pretentious. And that feels so intentional like she took care to make sure her books were accessible and enjoyable to a wide variety of readers. That’s one of the things I really love about her.

The characters here are EXCELLENT. Aside from all of them being gorgeous and successful, I found them to be extremely relatable. I loved that Allie was so freaking communicative but she wasn’t emotional or romantic. She’s super logical- and of course she is; she’s an accountant! And Matt is the soft and sweet beating heart of the duo. That’s great and I love that, but also there’s way more to these characters than just that. Each of the three main characters is complete and complex.

Where Skye’s writing really shines for me is how realistic the romance is! I know some people don’t jive with that, but I love communication and understanding. I love when someone is worried that perhaps they’ve been misunderstood and they say something about it! I love when characters express how they feel about things, what their intentions or expectations are. I eat that shit up and let’s just say Skye kept me well-fed.

I loved it. This is peak romance.
