Read this book for my child development class. The gender roles are very strong in this. Would not recommend for your child

EllRay Jakes is a great older brother. When he finds out that his 4-year-old sister Alfie is being bullied at her preschool by a mean girl, EllRay wants to protect her and help her deal with this problem. Mean girl Suzette is a DRAGON and EllRay knows he can be a dragon slayer for his little sister, but Alfie has trouble sticking up for herself. So EllRay comes up with a plan. But will it work? And what if his plan makes EllRay a bully? Is it worth it?

This is the fourth book about EllRay Jakes and I picked it up without having read the others. I feel that it stands alone well. I really liked EllRay as a character. I'm a sucker for sibling stories and EllRay is a very caring older brother, while still being realistically annoyed at his preschool sister now and then. There's subtle humor throughout the story, for instance EllRay describing his sister's taco preferences:

"Alfie just puts cheese in her tacos. No meat, just cheese. But that's her decision, and you should get to choose how boring you want to be in life." (pg. 18)

This is an enjoyable early chapter book and I'll definitely be picking up more of EllRay's adventures.

An anti-bullying story. Jake tries to handle things himself - readers may question his methods, but his heart is in the right place EllRay is endearing. I want the whole series for the library!

An early middle grade series I read to the kids. It's for pretty young kids, so it's not the most thrilling, but EllRay is a pretty good narrator and kept things interesting.
