I love it when the good guys profit by not being so good.

The setting and period detail is just fabulous, although the actual mystery is not as good as others I have read. The ending was surprising though, and the characters were enjoyable.

This book is SO BORING!! It's not like me to struggle 3/4 of the way through a book, trying to find merit, then realizing I'm not OBLIGATED to read it! And, just so you know, I normally love Pears books: Instance I've read twice and I've also read most of the Argyll series and very much enjoyed them. Between Flavia's "sick stomach" (LOL, like we didn't figure that out the first time it was mentioned), to Argyll's rhapsodizing as he spends pages imagining what might have happened (just get along with the investigation already), to awkward sentences that one has to read two or three times to try to figure out what Pears is trying to say....

Overall I really enjoyed this series, some books more and some less. The one I had picked up at a second-hand bookstore months back, turned out to be my favorite, and this last one felt a bit weak and I liked it the least, for somehow everything so neatly tied together and I didn't finish it for the sheer pleasure of it but more so that I could say that I have read all books in Argyll series.

This was just a bit of fluff...however it was absolutely delightfully fun. It's nice to read something light for a change.
