I can't believe this book was first published in the 1860s! It reads very modern. There's bigamy, murder, arson, and blackmail. I can imagine people sitting around discussing it after cliff hangers like a soap opera mystery. Do you know lady audley's secret? Do I know her secret? When you are halfway through the book you will wonder how there is still half a book left because certain things are so clear by that point... But keep going!

One of my kids closed the book on Kindle and the loan expired.  Not sure if I want to finish…

“The three demons of Vanity, Selfishness, and Ambition, had joined hands and said, ‘This woman is our slave, let us see what she will become under our guidance.’”

I officiallly love victorian sensation fiction. This could’ve taken a slight trim to the page count, but overall, it was worth it. Good writing, and a good twist (although I was kind of suspecting it).
