Oh good grief. How has this series of books about Alex Cross lasted as long as it has? In this book Alex Cross is a PhD level psychology who works as a detective in the Washington DC police department. He's also the liaison between the police and the FBI, which is how he's drafted into this story.

In short, this story is about groups of bank robbers headed by "The Mastermind" who are robbing banks, and killing the captives for no good reason. They're shooting people on the way out. The robbers have the money, so they can't understand why people are being shot. They're under no pressure. Cross is brought in when there are a number of the attacks occur in Washington.

I sometimes feel that Patterson is trying to send a message in these books. Cross spends a lot of time trying to balance his home and work life in these books. There's almost as much discussion about home, as there is the investigation. This is fine, just something that I'm not interested in.

My other grumble is that it's formulaic. Formulaic can be good, if there is a little variety involved, but this didn't happen here. I just spent my time thinking it's not him because of this or him because of that or her because she's introduced to early, or her because she's been introduced too late.

If you can get over my grumbles (or not read too many mysteries), you'll enjoy the book. If you can't, you're more likely to be cursing it.
