- 4/5
- sweetest short read ever
- I love that Tommy and Everett are both older (not teenagers or in their 20s), and act accordingly.
- My only complaint is that I wish that this was a full-length novel! I would have loved explore more relationships (Tommy and his son, Tommy and Pat, Everett and Pat, etc.); Tommy's and Everett's fear of not being good enough for the other; Tommy's trauma; etc.

I originally read this when it was part of a book of short stories (for the life of me, I can’t recall which one), but upon re-reading it I recalled that enjoyed it both then and now. It’s a little melancholy to start but it ended delightfully with an implied HEA and *the* best appearance by an ex-wife.

Review:
Short, clever, and ridiculously sweet! Cat Sebastian is terrific with quotable lines that get right at those things you’ve never been able to verbalize.

Tommy needed a drink. He also needed a nap, and possibly to lie down on that hideous carpet in his living room and stare at the ceiling and cry. Nobody had told him how much of his late thirties would involve lying on floors and crying.

It’s a horrible thing, choosing between loving yourself and letting yourself be loved by the world, and even worse to have to make that choice when you’re young and desperate for approval.

I want to love you when we make mistakes, and I want to love you when we don’t know what to do.

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5: Better than great, an undeniably enjoyable read, but not quite life-changing. Doesn’t feel like it’s glaringly missing anything, but there is no je ne sais quoi that would make it hauntingly good.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🔺2.5: A little tingle (A few explicit scenes, but short and not very detailed)

Perspective: third
Tense: past
POV: dual
