An overall amusing suspense, in the manner of Lady Hadley's Secret, etc. But also contains dialog and ideas that are as expected for the racism of the times. I enjoyed the narrator making fun of herself as an old woman sleuth, but it didn't feel like the racist comments were in that vein--they were stated quite plainly and openly. Not so many that I immediately stopped reading, but the rest of the books didn't have enough value to be worth picking up any other books by the author. Most offensive is that they were stated as fact, and completely unnecessary. The book could be easily expurgated and have the plot, characterizations, and tone remain the same.
