When We Are Kind tells a story of acts of kindness in a young child's life. What I loved about the story, besides the illustrations and the Indigenous connection, was that kindness took different forms. Kindness took the form of the child being kind to others and how that makes them feel, and how the child feels when others are kind or when the earth is kind. I thought self-reflection and this showcase of how and where kindness can be found was a great lesson for kids! This book would be easy to incorporate into an education world and I would highly recommend it for parents/guardians to read as well. The words were relatable and easy to understand. Kids would easily grasp this concept! Loved it!

Beautiful. Amazing simple practical ways children (and adults) can show kindness to others and themselves. Perfect words to express how being kind makes us feel.
Love this book.

I thought this was a perfect book about not only being kind to yourself and others, but also treating the Earth with kindness too. The pictures are great and the text is short enough that this would be a really great fit for story time :)

Kindness is such a wonderful subject. What I liked about this book, besides the pictures, was that included in kindness to others, there was kindness to yourself, and kindness that the earth provides. That particular page sparked conversation with my seven year old when he wondered about "How the earth is kind to us?" It was a great point to make to him that the earth does indeed do us a great kindness in providing for us.

The pictures were great to look at as well. It is such an oddly specific thing, but I really loved the flowers... The illustrations of the family showed kindness in action.

It's a nice way to show children to be nice with their friends and family, but also to be kind to themselves, from the perspective of the First Nations. We need more books like that to bring us all together and help to the reconciliation.

This book is written in English and in Diné (Navajos, who are a Native American people of the Southwestern United States). Both the author and the illustrator are part First Nations, living in Victoria, British Columbia.

I recieved an advanced copy from Netgalley and Orca Books.

This was an absolute pleasure to read-- wonderful illustrations of diverse friends and family illustrating universal kindnesses-- extra-long walks for the dog, helping our elders, being with our families. Perfect for story times toddler and up, a great way to start conversations about ways we can be kind to our loved ones. Orca continues to publish beautiful books I'm proud to suggest to patrons.
