Overall, it was entertaining and my 5 year old enjoyed it. My complaints are as follows:
1. the only core female character was mostly into ghosts and aliens while the male characters were into tangible science and frequently teased her for her interests.
2. mismatches between the illustrations and the text (laptop in the image and left out of the scene distinctly in the text).
3. use of "further" in reference to distance.
4. a criminal squatting in a house for sale had at least 6 lemons. this seems highly unlikely! and he kept food in the pantry, but covered the hole in the floor during the day when there would be showings.

I liked their maker attitude and the projects in the back of the book. I like that all of their materials are recycled and reused. I also like the playful and loving intergenerational relationship between the kids and a grandfather. I also appreciated the racial identities of the characters (but was NOT into how they dealt with breaking the law) and that two of the three kids lived in something other than a two-parent home that they owned. The suspense was well done and I'll be excited to read it to the 5 year old, who will be captivated.
