Not to be dramatic but I think that Cat Sebastian has ruined me for other authors. I made the mistake of reading three of her books in quick succession and then thought: "I'll take a break and go and read something else." Boy, was I wrong. Needless to say, I did not succeed and I am now back reading Cat's books which I suspect I won't stop doing until I've read everything she has ever written.

Anyway Peter Cabot and Caleb Murphy are two men who deserve the world and each other. This book was filled with everything a great romance should be filled with:
1. Great chemistry
2. Amazing banter.
3. Solid development
4. LOOOOVVEEE (in abundance)
5. Pining. Slightly painful, beautiful pining.

This was a much better ready than the first book in the Cabot series because it was slightly longer. I loved the development of the relationship between Peter and Caleb. Even though the book only spanned a week and was just under 200 pages, it felt so much longer. It felt comparable to other well-developed, longer romance books I have read, if not better.

One thing about Cat Sebastian's characters, they will be as realistic as they are aspirational. And they will deal with their issues. This is not an author who adds problems just to make things interesting nor is this an author who characters' problems suddenly disappears because they start sleeping together or falling in love. No, they WORK on those issues together.

Like all of Cat's characters I have read so far, Peter and Caleb were endlessly in tune with each other, were each other's cheerleaders and loved each other to no end. The fact that they did not even need to say the words: "I love you." once but the other person could tell and I could feel it as I read every page is just remarkable. They challenged each other but supported each other through and through. I also loved the exploration of their different socio-economic backgrounds and Peter's self-loathing, people-pleasing tendencies.

The saddest parts of Cat's stories is always the men being unable to live openly. The palpable fear that runs through them whenever they're in public due to bigotry kills me. The fact that their futures are so uncertain as a result. It's just...ugh.

Anyway, what a book honestly. The respect and care. The angst and the joy. It was just everything and I wish I could recommend it to everyone.

- 4.5/5
- Yep, Cat Sebastian is definitely one of my new favorite authors.
- She understands that it's about the softness! Wanting to change for the better, but wondering if you're even capable of that, only to realize that yes, you are when you are met with patience and gentleness! Learning to love yourself because someone loved and continues to love you at your worst!
- Seriously. Read Cat Sebastian's books if you want a guaranteed happy ending, comfort, and the hope that this kind of unconditional love exists, be it romantic, platonic, or both.
- grump vs. sunshine trope
- (More specifically, I wrote in my phone, "Peter is my little meow meow, and Caleb is my grumpy hissing cat.")
- exquisite banter

An absolute dream of a book with lovely MC’s, a road trip that made me yearn for places I’ve never been, delicious diner food and a plot that feels like a warm hug. I couldn’t have asked for more.
