[reread in preparation for the Veronica Mars 2019 Hulu revival]

So it has become apparent to me that there's a reason I didn't really feel like writing a review the first time around I read this.

Not a whole dang lot happens in this book, especially when it comes to the case Veronica is working. She finds the guy almost straight off the bat and the rest of the novel is her trying to prove he did it. It isn't uninteresting by any means, but it makes the tension in the story slacken, especially when we find out, oh, there's no twist that's coming, she really found him that quick.

The character moments and the characters they develop are what save this book, though. I'm really interested to see how much of this affects or makes it into the revival. I'm just excited that there's more Veronica Mars to enjoy!

The second Veronica Mars book is here and it's even better than the first. It would hold up pretty well as a standalone story, but watch the show first if you have never met Veronica because you'll be missing a really great piece of TV and also there's a lot of huge spoilers.

I really liked how Veronica's and Logan's relationship continued to grow and there was some information about Logan past in the 9-year gap they were apart that shed some light on how he is today that I found really interesting.

The case was pretty hard. Veronica is hired by the Neptune Grand to investigate if Grace Manning's claim that she was assaulted by an employer is true or not. The first 1/3 of the book was pretty intriguing while Veronica started investigating the case. She finds how the rapist is way before the end of the book but it doesn't stop being interesting. The whole shenanigans she has to do to find evidence to link him to the rape were cool to read. Veronica in her element.

If there's something that the books (and the movie) are doing right is indulging the fans by bringing back people that appeared in the show (bigger or smaller parts) while still linking them to the story.

Like with the first book, I started reading and I was completely hooked because Veronica Mars will always be my favorite P.I. I can't wait for the next book.

Also,
Spoilerthere's a new sheriff in town.

This was a very good Wrap It All Up book for VM. It really is what the movie should have been. Most certainly darker and more brooding than the TV series, it none-the-less delivers the snark and wit and humour that is expected of VM.

More character development and Veronica realizing she has to be a grey hat to keep the lights on. She can't necessarily let her passion rule her. This mystery was a bit more of a reach than the first one.

While I really liked this, I realize that I may have overrated the first Veronica Mars book.
The case meanders and suspense is ok, but not great.
What disturbed me, and that may also apply to the first book, that while she has doubts, there is some vigilantism (mostly by others) and rule breaking, ok, she is not police or FBI. Still, nowadays this disturbs me more than in the past.
Recommended, but you should know the TV-Series and probably the first book, not that it is necessary, this can be read as a standalone, so a lot of needed information is repeated.

Great if you liked the show, but I can see that it might feel contrived (especially some of the language) if you don't have a working knowldege of Neptune. So give it a try and suspend disbelief! The story's solid.
