****1/2 This beautiful book gives an overview of Matthew Henson's life through his (co-)discovery of the North Pole. Warm colors spill across every page, which is especially welcome in this book about the cold, white North. The story is inspirational and talks about how Matthew Henson and Robert Peary didn't give up until they reached the North Pole. An author's note includes more information about Henson and his struggle for recognition after the great discovery.

Another reminder on the one-sidedness of history books. Matthew Henson should be a name as well known as Columbus and Balboa...but he's not.

of planting flags at the ends of the Earth,

Young Matt had that same hunger to explore,

For Matt was born in 1866, just after the Civil War,
a time when poor black boys like him
had few chance to roam the next county,
to say nothing of another country, the seven seas,
