This account of Jackie Robinson’s rookie season is perfect for baseball fans and sports historians alike.  The descriptions of how his teammates and other players reacted to his entry into the league and interacted with him while were not shocking. Not to lessen  that Dixie Walker was racist, his acceptance and eventual friendship with Robinson exemplifies how humans can change.  Politics is sprinkled throughout the novel, but the last 5% discusses it the most.  Recently I read Eig’s biography of MLK Jr and preferred his narration style over this narrator’s.

I knew a lot of this story already, but it was still good storytelling.

This was an ok read. It was a long drawn out recap of Jackie Robinson's first season. The author tried too hard at times to cover more than just baseball. It didnt always work. I would have liked toread more about the on the field action and more personal stories featuring Jackie and his impact.

An interesting look at all the off the field factors and influences that Jackie Robinson and all those around him had to deal with during his first year in the major leagues. What a difficult and courageous decision for those involved. And I never realized how much Jackie held himself in check and swallowed his emotions for the good of the cause.

I finished a book about Jackie Robinson on his day by accident, but happy it worked out this way. I’ve seen 42 and even know an actor from the movie. Similar idea, but Opening Day touches on more stories than just Robinson’s. Unfortunately, his ending is sad, but this book overs a look into a man who knew he would be a legend.
