I am really, really glad we get to spend so much time with Reza and Esha this season.

Lots happens in this newest episode of Tremontaine, the queer fantasy of manners story from Serial Box.

First off, someone tried to kill Tess. That’s literally how the episode opens. Luckily, Tess lived through it, but it puts a whole new degree of urgency into the question of her safety and protection. She’s still all, “I don’t want to make myself into a legend,” but I think she should go for it. Tess is already practically an uncrowned queen of Riverside, and I’d love to see her embrace it. Oh, and we get to see Charlotte again in Tess’s sections! If you don’t remember, Charlotte is the young girl who led those boys away from releasing live rats in the merchant quarters. She’s got that plucky urchin girl quality I adore, so I hope we continue to see more of her.

Also, Kaab’s snooping again. She’s snuck in to investigate one of the rival merchant households in the middle of the night. Dodging traps and risking discovery, she finds some crucial information. Wow, I don’t know where the plot line’s going to go from here. I wish I could speculate more about this, but, alas, spoilers.

One final note on Kaab and Tess: at long last, they met again in this episode. It was less dramatic than I’d assumed and more bittersweet. I think it’s probably better that way.

After the events of “Into the Woods,” Diane is Not Happy with Lionel. Who does he think he is? It’s time for her to have some stern words with him. You guys, Diane was glorious here. So perfect. Queen. Goddess. Diane’s “relationship chat” was hands down my favorite scene in this entire episode.

Meanwhile, the Dragon is still plotting. Someone’s been messing with Rafe’s school, and it’s not hard to guess who’s behind it. Well, not hard for the reader to guess anyway. Rafe is flummoxed. Sure, people at the university hate him, but could they really be behind all this? Does he have enemies he doesn’t know about? He hasn’t yet caught on that this is about Diane and not him, and oh man is he going to be so mad when he finds out.

But the scheme of Davenant I find most worrisome is his sudden interest in Micah. He invited her to go play cards with him. Leave our precious Micah alone Davenant! Micah’s all frustrated by the whole Game of Social Graces thing, and she’s starting to worry that Diane’s been playing it with her. Oh, Micah. This is why you’re so precious. Micah’s perhaps the one person Diane doesn’t put on a mask for (although Esha’s arguable), which is why I love their relationship so much.

That about sums it up for “Behind the Mask.” In the next episode, as always, my hope is that nothing bad happens to Micah.
