This was just ok for me. At first I was all in for the characters, but really not enough happened for me in this book. I almost dnf’d but decided that I’d like to see where these characters end up.

I happened across this book somewhere in the depths of Bookstagram and added it to my library holds list. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect since it was published a few years ago and I hadn’t read any reviews. But don’t you love going into books blind sometimes?

I quickly realized within the first few chapters that this was going to be a character-driven novel without a standard plot. This book is centered around Mikey, one of 6 childhood friends calling themselves “The Gunners”, who lose one of their own as 30-something adults. Though they’ve kept in contact as adults, they just aren’t as close as they once were. They all attend the funeral, however, as their six are now five, and navigate through the loss of their dear friend. Secrets and feelings come to light that otherwise would’ve remained hidden. A few shocking moments thrown in. It was enjoyable to see the dynamic of the group change as the story progressed.

I don’t think I’ve read a book with such well-developed characters in a long while. I felt like I was one of the friends in the group! I love a book that makes you feel part of the story. With that being said, I found myself disliking Alice, one of the six friends. I found her obnoxious and crass and her personality was distracting. Just my opinion, of course, but I just did not like this character. Probably because these are the type of people I steer clear from irl.

The Gunners was a very easy read that I breezed through in three days. The story itself wasn’t bad—I would even go so far as using the word cute at times—but the characters weren’t very likable and the dialogue seemed incredible forced. That said, my overall impression of the book wasn’t a negative one, and I think that had a lot to do with how well the author paced the story. It really wasn’t a bad book, just not something that’s going to stick with me.
