What a perfect little story!

It's strange, and beautiful, and, unexpectedly, with a sweet happy ending. The author managed to bring the characters to life in less than 50 pages. You get to care about them, you understand Nate's motivations, and... I just loved it.

Liked this, felt true to the times, paced well. It is a short story but generally only covers a few days so that was OK.
Johnnie Banks, convicted felon, and Nathan Devereaux, federal agent, travelling to see Banks’ ill mother.
So, as the story moves along you wonder what sort of anything these two disparate men can possibly have. Then I wondered if it was a set up to spring Banks from prison (no).
So Banks is who and what we see and really don’t get much at all about him or from his pov.
Nathan is a whole other story or two. We get some of his history. How he got away with things I guess is down to the time (and having money).
So towards the end a large pinch of salt needed, but enjoyed

3.5 Stars but rounded up because it is definitely better than a 3.

Why doesn't this story have more reviews?
Excellent, historical short read (less than an hour) about a prisoner who is let out of jail in the care of a federal agent to visit his dying mother.
The story is more than it seems and I can't say much more than that without giving the twists away.
Highly recommended.
