Excellent steampunk adventure. Love the setting of colonial Africa. In the tradition of classic Victorian storytelling by the likes of Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle and H.G. Wells with elements of Wild Wild West thrown in. Jack Tyler is very good at this kind of fun, steampunk adventure and these stories deserve to be more widely known and read. The episodic nature of each chapter makes this great for a bit of escapist relaxation with each chapter a complete story within the whole. Beyond the Rails has all the makings of an excellent steampunk series; great setting that really lends itself to good old fashioned adventure and awesome characters that you care about. I look forward to reading more of the adventures of the Kestrel and her crew. I rarely give 5 stars but since these stories aim to be great steampunk adventure and they do it so well, I figured they deserve the 5 stars. Great relaxation, escapist reading.
