Uhm, pretty much all the trigger warnings for Gunmetal God's by Zamil Akhtar... Seriously, this is proper grimdark that doesn't shy away from horrific scenes. To me it didn't feel gratuitous, but fitting the tone and style of the book.
There's two opposing sides in a long lasting war, which is clearly inspired by Christian / Muslim conflicts. This is an interesting world with angels, shas, paladins, djinns, gods, magic and I really enjoyed the different influences than just our usual western world, and the blend of the two made it both fresh and yet not too hard to settle into.
There's two men who are bitter enemies, and we get to live the story through their eyes. For me this worked really well, as both are deeply flawed warriors, who think they fight for the right course, while drifting ever farther from their own path. I thought their personalities where well developed and their decisions made sense, even though I wanted to strangle them at times. Neither if them is an actual hero, which made this story all the more interesting to me.
There's quite some twists and turns. Some I saw coming from far away, but others took me completely by surprise. Combined with the super fast pace and almost constant action the book felt a lot shorter to me than it actually was.
I'll definitely look up more of the authors book!
Spoiler
Violence towards animals as well as killing off plenty of people, all the way down to infants. No on the page rape, but it's made clear it exists in the world, and at least one scene gets close. There's also some incest, a lot of murder, violence, war crimes and more. There's two opposing sides in a long lasting war, which is clearly inspired by Christian / Muslim conflicts. This is a grimdark book and is absolutely brutal in so many places, however it does not feel like the author has to force these scenes into the book. This world just genuinely feels like a real one, a place where so many awful things happen, but also a place where many good things can happen. The ending of the first book is not exactly a happy one but neither is it depressing, it just feels realistic for the world it's in. The characters are great, I feel for them and hate them in such a well made way. The magic also does feel somewhat unique in this world though it definitely takes some inspiration from Lovecraft. Overall a masterpiece of a book, one that fills me with joy that's it's written by a Pakistani man.
This epic fantasy novel is set in a world that's part Ottoman/Persian and part Medieval when the Crusades were in full swing. To win the final battle, old heroes will need to rise and believers will shun their gods to accept a newer, much darker deity. Dead emperors and theocratic demands will vie for victory. Who wins and if even that can be called winning is yet to be decided. I found the worldbuilding well done even if I wasn't completely sold on the rest.

A really interesting start to a story that I think I will be very excited to finish.
It starts in a way I enjoy but wasn’t crazy about, but by the end I definitely wanted more.
I really enjoyed the perspective shifts between Kevah and Micah and the way their stories play into one another.
The ending sets up some things I’m very much looking forward to in books two and three. I would definitely recommend this to someone who enjoys fantasy.

Meh, liked it enough to finish.. really thought it would be more than what it was. The inconsistencies really got to me.
