This isn’t exactly the best story HPL has ever told, but it is one of the most beautifully written. Also, lots of exposition on what we know his philosophical opinions were. It’s exquisite.

Quoique très inégales en terme de qualité et de profondeur, les quelques nouvelles compilées dans ces pages offrent un très bel aperçu de l'imaginaire lovecraftien et son envoûtante poésie du cauchemar. Singulière à cet égard, la première - et principale - nouvelle "Night Ocean" contient à peu près, en touches légères, tout ce qui fait la beauté de ce monument de superbe angoisse qu'est l'œuvre de H.P. Lovecraft...

My biggest disappointment regarding Lovecraft. Incoherent melancholic story without any proper horror. Howard isn’t so good at these things, so it was quite painful to read.

This is very short, barely novella-length. The moody protagonist comes to the seashore on vacation. What starts as a time of rest and healing from his recent overwork turns ominous and dark as the season turns. He's a solitary figure, an artist with a rich inner life who looks down on the petty amusements of 'normal' people. His aloofness from human society leaves him lonely. Being untethered from everyday concerns makes him vulnerable to dramatic mood swings and experiences that are perhaps hallucinatory.

There are two frightening incidents which leave him badly shaken, and he departs, a broken man.

J'ai trouvé certaines nouvelles de ce recueil excellentes, mais certaines étaient moins intéressantes. J'ai particulièrement adoré les idées de récits et les conseils d'écriture du carnet personnel de Lovecraft à la fin du recueil. Je donne donc un quatre pour l'ensemble de ce livre qui contenait des nouvelles variant entre le trois et le cinq étoiles.
